This first incarnation of the phenomenon of erosion is accompanied by the inevitable instability of an economic system based on a false premise: the notion of unlimited resources at our disposal. The case of Canary Wharf is used for this purpose: built by the Canadian financier Paul Reichmann under the Thatcher government in the late 1980s on the former site of the West India Company docks (a colonial-era enterprise), Canary Wharf is a veritable city within a city. This hub of international finance is examined here through the motif of its metal and glass architecture and the extensive list of its tenants - neighbours that include the headquarters of the world's largest banks and investment funds. 

The work also brings together so-called exotic species that are at the heart of singular histories and dynamics in the UK. The noisy hold of the ring-necked parakeet on the parks and gardens of the English metropolis and the silent presence of the medicinal and ornamental plants that make up the historical collection of the Chelsea Physic Garden, partly constituted during colonial era expeditions, are thus brought together.
